Back in the Day

Back before there was the Internet, before there was even television, it was common for people to gather in their living rooms to engage each other in stimulating conversation, to inspire and be inspired by one another. They called them salons.

Salons met the universal human need for freedom and connection.  In a society dominated by strict hierarchies, salons offered a woman-led egalitarian alternative.  Where church and state told people what was truth, salons asked people the vital questions of the day. Truth emerged from the process. Many credit salons with the success of the Enlightenment.

Part of a New Enlightenment

Today, we are witnessing a modern-day enlightenment. Rigid categories of truth are crumbling. People are seeking the Truth that underlies all. Common Ground is based on this fresh version of an ancient wisdom — that what connects us is more real than what we think of as difference. We see salons as a vital part of this new enlightenment. They are a circle where everyone contributes and everyone listens, where there are many truths in one conversation.

What is a Common Ground Salon?

The recipe is simple: a living room-sized group of people and something inspiring. The inspiration can come from a poem, a work of art, an idea, a song, a film, or anywhere meaning is found. From there the magic of Spirit takes over.

Imagine that you are greeted at the door of a nearby home and immediately drawn in by the aroma of a pot of soup simmering in the kitchen. The music is upbeat and your heart warms as you see familiar faces. You join the group for a nourishing meal and reconnecting. The hostess offers a reading about new beginnings. One person responds with a story about how their experience that very day resonates with the reading. You suddenly realize that the universe has been calling you to try something new and you leave that evening feeling connected, with fresh insight to ponder your next step.
