“A little gem” my husband says of this fine film. A father-son relationship gone awry, an impromptu visit to a lecture on reincarnation, a chance meeting and all of a sudden…an amusing, poignant drama emerges. It’s a film about relationship, about love, about humans and dogs and about grief. Peter O’Toole gives a subtle yet powerful performance of a man in his last days. Jeremy Northam (as his son) is a seeker and an adventurer who meets Dean Spanley, (Sam Neill) a priest. As Dean Spanley is plied with a special Imperial Tokay liqueur, he tells of his former life as…well,a dog! This rich, layered, finely made, quirky film is not currently available in the U.S., (but “we have vays” of obtaining it, so come see, don’t miss!). You’ll be glad you did. Our film discussion afterward will explore the film’s rich themes and our own parallel life experiences.
